Common features of these include contemplative, silhouetted figures, night skies or morning mists, barren trees and Gothic or Megalithic ruins.ĩ. Friedrich is recognised chiefly for his allegorical landscapes. Friedrich died in obscurity, and it was not until the 1970s that he came to favour once more.Ĩ. Though he gained early renown, this was lost over his later years. Friedrich’s popularity waxed and waned over his lifetime. I personally really enjoy this masterpiece of Romanticism. Robert Macfarlane discusses the painting in terms of its significant influence on how mountain climbing has been viewed in the Western world since the Romantic era, calling it the "archetypical image of the mountain-climbing visionary", and describing its power in representing the concept that standing on mountain tops is something to be admired, an idea which barely existed in earlier centuries. Gaddis (2004) felt that the impression of the wanderer's position atop the precipice and before the twisted outlook leaves "is contradictory, suggesting at once mastery over a landscape and the insignificance of the individual within it". ![]() Dembo (2001), who expressed sympathy, claimed that Wanderer is a metaphor for the unknowable future. According to Gorra's (2004) analysis, the painting's theme is one of Kantian reflection, which is communicated through the wanderer's gazes into the sea of fog's gloom. When compared to previous works like Chalk Cliffs on Rügen and The Sea of Ice, Wanderer over the Sea of Fog is loyal to the Romantic movement and Friedrich's personal aesthetic. The rocks on which the traveler stands are a group on the Kaiserkrone. The group of rocks in front of it represents the Gamrig near Rathen. The mountain in the background to the left could be either the Rosenberg or the Kaltenberg. In the background to the right is the Zirkelstein. The painting is composed of various elements from the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Saxony and Bohemia, sketched in the field but in accordance with his usual practice, rearranged by Friedrich himself in the studio for the painting. Fading mountains rise in the distance on the left, softly flattening out into lowland plains in the east. On top of these escarpments, groves of trees may be seen through the fog wreaths. In the center of the area, a number of additional ridges protrude from the mass, perhaps not dissimilar to those the wanderer is standing on. The wanderer looks out at a scene covered in a dense sea of fog, his hair blowing in the wind. He is holding a walking stick with his right hand while wearing a dark green overcoat. It is presently housed in Hamburg, Germany's Kunsthalle.Ī young man is seen in the foreground standing on a rocky ledge with his back to the spectator. It is regarded as a prime example of Romanticism and one of its greatest achievements.
